Trucks designed for use in specific desert regions require special adaptations due to the extreme conditions associated with these areas. In order to keep the driver comfortable in the intense heat, these trucks are usually outfitted with powerful air conditioning units. Their engines have also been modified to ensure optimal functioning at higher temperatures; these motors have special auxiliary cooling systems, temperature sensitive parts, and other grade protective elements which allows them to effectively withstand heat. For improved sand traction, the tires have distinct tread designs and increased sidewall strength. Furthermore, these trucks may have reinforced undercarriages to guard against jagged rocks and rough ground. Some of the desert trucks are also equipped with extra fuel and water tanks in order to minimize the rate of refueling and rewatering needed in remote desert locations
